Christ is our Refuge
Read: Psalm 142
As an introverted member of planet Earth, solitude can never be overrated. It seems every day comes with its noises and stimuli from all sides, suffocating me until I’m too tired to stay awake.
The same thing is true of your soul. The noises, the competing stimuli, all of it can take a toll on your soul, and we need a place to rest and be restored.
David wrote this while hiding out in a cave:
“When my spirit faints within me,
you know my way!…
Look to the right and see:
there is none who takes notice of me;
No refuge remains to me;
no one cares for my soul.
I cry to you, O Lord;
I say, “You are my refuge,
my portion in the land of the living,” (Psalm 142:4-5, ESV).
A maskil is one of those words that has a pretty broad meaning: some describe it as meaning “enlightenment” while others see it as “wisdom” or “seeking”, but it’s somewhere in the middle of all of those.
Hiding out in the cave, David calls out to God. From my reading, it seems like David is freaking out. “Look to the right and see: there is none who takes notice of me. No refuge remains to me; no one cares for my soul,” (Psalm 142).
But it’s in this cave David points us back to God as our refuge, our portion in the land of the living. We can look to him for truth, for knowledge, for centering in the middle of the chaos and unknown.
So whatever may face you today, this week, this year, whenever the noise gets too loud and your soul grows weary, remember the Lord is your refuge, your hiding place. Find your truest rest in Him.
